Be careful when adjusting the rod that affects the valve, checking that the rod runs smoothly and returns to the neutral position.
Feel free to fill the system with automatic transmission oil, but then the hydraulic hoses must be replaced, because the older hoses cannot withstand automatic transmission oil. But on a 70-year-old car, the hoses have almost always been changed before. Check if the hoses can withstand automatic transmission oil by lubricating them a little with oil and then rubbing with a white cloth. if the oil dissolves the rubber so that it discolours, the hoses cannot withstand automatic transmission oil.
