Generally

For cars with switch tips without HEI
Pertronix Ignitor switchless ignition system, which fits inside the distributor cap. With this rebuild kit you can remove the switch tips and capacitor forever. Maintenance-free and completely invisible because nothing is visible on the outside of the distributor cap. The company that manufactures these promises a higher engine power, better idling, lower fuel consumption, and more easily started car. Ignitor provides a strong and even spark. The ignition changes no more than ¼ degree from zero to 6,000 revolutions, it is epoxy sealed so it can withstand moisture, oil and dirt, the engine runs smoother and produces more power, petrol consumption is lower. We do not know what is reality, but we have this system on our own cars and are completely satisfied with the function. But the best thing is probably that you don't have to change the switch tip and adjust it. For example, we have a 1959 Cadillac with an Ignitor that has gone approx. 10,000 miles without the distributor cap being off, normally a maximum of 1000 miles between switch tip changes. Changing the ignition coil is not necessary, the Ignitor works fine with a normal standard ignition coil, BUT the Ignitor requires more of an ignition coil than a switch tip, so if your standard ignition coil is something like that when fresh it's perfectly ok, but if you don't know how old it is, then it is safest to replace it.

Tip!

The ignitor must have a 12 volt supply.
When you have removed the switch tips and the capacitor, put them in the Ignitor box, which you then put in your luggage. Then you have security, in case the electronics stop working. And since you've prepared with this, you'll probably never need to open the box again. But you never know!! Be careful with the cable routing, if you are careless, the cables may be damaged by nuts, resulting in failure

HEY?

HEI Means: High Energy Ignition And it was the new switchless ignition system that GM came standard with in 1975, in 1974 it was an optional extra on Cadillac.
If you have an HEI ignition system, the distributor cap is mounted with 4 screws and the ignition coil sits on top of the distributor cap.
If you don't have an HEI ignition system, the distributor cover is mounted with 2 screws and you have a regular round ignition coil that sits a bit from the distributor.
