Check that you have a ballast resistor, someone may have removed it! How do you know you have resistance? Well, here it is: 1953-58 has a ballast resistor in whitish porcelain between the ignition lock and the ignition coil it sits in the engine compartment. 1959-74 has a resistance cable built into the cable bundle, it looks like a cable with a gray-white fabric-like sheath. + (plus) on the ignition coil must be connected to this resistor. – (minus) on the ignition coil must be connected to the distributor. If you don't have this resistance, you get a very short life on the switch tips and the ignition coil.

HEI Means: High Energy Ignition And it was the new switchless ignition system that GM came standard with in 1975, in 1974 it was an optional extra on Cadillac.
If you have an HEI ignition system, the distributor cap is mounted with 4 screws and the ignition coil sits on top of the distributor cap.
If you don't have an HEI ignition system, the distributor cover is mounted with 2 screws and you have a regular round ignition coil that sits a bit from the distributor.
